In Defense of Gaga: Stop the  Matricidal Abuse

Lady Gaga: She's probably one of the most polarizing pop culture figures of our day. To some, she's nothing more than a fame hound or a sign of the Christian apocalypse, to others, she's the reason they are still alive. I am on the latter half of that spectrum. Countless times she has came through my speakers, pulled me by my hair and out of the funk I was in. I am a proud Little Monster.

I really hate people who post rude comments about Lady Gaga. I know she's not everyone's cup of tea, but don't be rude! She is a person just like you with feelings. She may not see what you said about her, but you still look like an ass. People are biased against her. Why does Nicki Minaj get away with her own antics and Gaga doesn't? I haven't heard of Minaj charitable actions. Some even think you're stupid and/or have bad taste because you like Lady Gaga. We've been bullied by our peers enough, thank you very much. It's not just the homosexuals who like her. When she rolls into a town near you, go see who she draws in. You'll see young people, male and female, gay and straight. You'll even see full-fledged adults and senior citizens in line to see the show.

Many people do not even try to see past her crazy outfits, understand the symbolism, or see how genuine she really is. Her symbolism is the equivalent to the books you read in high school English. You have to understand it to get the bigger picture.  I don't care you if you don't like her, but don't troll where people who do congregate. I want to show you she's not the person you think she is.

Last Christmas, Gaga opened 'Gaga's Workshop' in Barneys of New York. Robin Roberts interviewed while getting a tour and said during promos "She's down to Earth." The proceeds of sales from the workshop went to the Born This Way Foundation. When Gaga heard her driver was expecting, she donated a years supply of diapers and paid for the nursery. Even Oprah herself favors her, saying  "Don't let the costumes fool you."

Gaga is real philanthropist. She donates absurd amounts of money whenever a natural disaster strikes. Her MAC Viva Glam lipstick raised $202 million dollars for HIV/AIDS research. Along with her mother, she started the Born This Way Foundation that focuses on "youth empowerment and equality by addressing issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change."

I admit, I had my doubts, even when I openly proclaimed myself as a Little Monster. I was nearly certain that she was two different people. She just looked so different in The Fame Era. What always baffled me was that her speaking voice was always the same. However, I started watching makeup and beauty tutorials on YouTube and learned just how much hair and makeup could change the look of a face. Not only that, but weight loss. She did nearly a show a night for how long? The entire span of the Monster Ball Tour. When I went to her concert I remember her saying  "I've always wanted to be too busy for sleep and I finally am." The Monster Ball Tour ended in May, and only a few weeks afterward she was already working on her next tour, saying she wants to be back on stage. Let me preach about the amazedness of her voice just for a minute, not her singing voice (her singing is spot on, to say the least), but her speaking voice. She can change it so many ways! There's the baby-doll or robotic voice in "This is my Haus" introduction, her deeper voice that can be heard underneath her own singing in several of her songs.

Lady Gaga is not the woman you think she is. I like to think of her as a Pokemon. She constantly evolves into another, different form of herself. From the Fame Era of hair hair bows and facial appliqués to the Born This Way Era of shoulder horns and mint blonde, she is still the same, but just in a different way.

She always vocalizes her thankfulness to her fans. She views them and herself as a family, calling herself, 'Mother Monster'. Several of her Born This Way performances portray her giving birth. The actual video for the single, Born This Way goes deeper. It shows her giving birth to the perfect race, a race within humanity that held no prejudice or judgment. What she is alluding to, through the use of symbolism, is that the new race is her fans. She teaches them love and acceptance. Gaga is an excellent role model. I wouldn't worry about raising my future child around the likes of her (at the appropriate age of course). In the song "Scheisse" she sings, "Blonde high heeled feminist enlisting Fame for this." She is referring to the fact that she is using her fame to give light to important social issues such as gender equality, gay rights and bullying.

She does not just say things, she actually does them. She marched freely during the March for Equality, even telling a paparazzo that "if you're not going to march, then get out." I go to many concerts and follow many celebrities, but I have never seen one give away money like she does. When Haiti was ravaged by 2010 earthquake, she gave all the proceeds of Radio City Music Hall concert to them along with all the proceeds from sales on her online store for that day. Only hours after a tsunami and earthquake hit Japan, she tweeted links to buy bracelets, proceeds going to the relief fund. An attorney believed she was being misleading. Gaga's spokesperson called the suit, 'merit less.' Nothing has came of it.

Many people has seen a viral video going around of her stopping a concert to stop a fight that broke out in the audience.

"Stop fighting." She said forcefully, like a mother chiding her child, "There is no fighting here." Later, in a voice full of concern, asked if the victim was ok. If my memory serves me correctly, she invited the victimize audience member backstage afterwards and comforted her. Again, at the concert I attended, she donated $20,000 (don't quote me on that) to homeless youth, just because someone answered their phone when she called them during the song, 'Telephone'. Is it safe to assume that she did that for all her Monster Ball stops?

After her theatrical music videos (both acting in and directing), many of her fans want to see her in a movie. According to Gaga, she has been offered roles without even an audition. She turned them down saying,  'I want to work for it.'

See? She's really not the person you thought she was, was she? She's not the end of the world. She's only the beginning. Allow, me to reiterate, the purpose of this essay was not to convert you into a fan, it was merely to show her in another light. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask me. Remember, just dance, it'll be ok.

I'm not super keen on her music, just because I'm of the opinion that other things sound better, but I think that she's a good person, a hard worker, and obviously a creative mind.

I adore Gaga! Shes innovative generous genuine creative talented caring a deep. Shes worked EXTREMELY hard for all shes done. She is an artist in the truest sense of the word. Unlike other musicians she doesn't just redoubt the same old thing. She is smart and respectful and also extremely classy. There isn't a style of music she cant sing and I really cant say that for antithetic person on the charts today. Shes in an element all her own. No one can even come close to mother monster. She has switched up so many time in the Fame area she portages her self as a misunderstood promiscuous party girl who wasn't as she seemed. Now shes morphed into a power house mother with crazy symbollic style a huge heart. All while keeping her kick asa attituted and talent. Everytime I hear one of her songs and I think man she wont be able to out do herself this time she turns around and does. She is amazing and people who cant tell that by listening to her untouched live voice are out of their minds. Ok now my little rant is over Lol. Autocorrect probably f*cked some of that up but at almost three am I am way too tired to care Lol.

I'm not a Gaga fan, but the hate she gets is ridiculous. Most people don't look past the outfits.
Especially When you're into classic rock (or older music in general) and say that gaga is "alright" people give you the weirdest look.
She isn't just "alright". She has a great voice. I can appreciate talent even if her music doesn't appeal to me. Grouping her together with Katy Perry or Minaj is totally unfair.

I love her voice it is amazing both on the radio and in real life. And unlike Katy Perry or Nikki Minaj, she doesn't autotune the shit out of it. She doesn't care what other people think of her, she just expresses herself and her opinion. Most of her haters are people that are too scared to do so or simply intolerant of everyhing that is different than what they like. She is truly inspirational.

Well done. An amazing piece of writing describing everything that Mother Monster needs to be noticed for, not just her 'outlandish' outfits and her 'weird' hairstyles. You have included basically every reason as to why Lady Gaga is an incredible role model for all of us. Sure, she's made mistakes in her life before, but that's part of what makes you a human being, and some people are forgetting that she is one. Like you said, not eveyone's going to be a fan and haters have got to hate, but hopefully this essay will portray her in a different light to some who thought of her differently. I commend you for trying to open more eyes to the wonderful person that is Lady Gaga!

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure every famous artist is well aware of the negative, rude feedback on the internet. It's not like they really (have time to) care about it. This post, as much as I would agree with it, though I'm not a fan of her, will not change anything. Just ignore the trolls, they won't get heard or noticed by anyone of importance anyway, no matter how hard and long they're try. You're just working yourself up over nothing, do your blood pressure a favour and let 'em haters hate.

If you are going to criticize someone, please do not curse at them. Gaga never said a word about SOPA, but Anonymous decided to drag her name into with a letter to Sony. I hope you don't like Taylor Swift either...

See, I like Gaga, and I like her music. But when I heard that I was outraged. If it's not true, I apologize for my harsh words. And yeah, you're right I don't like Taylor Swift so I don't care one way or the other with her...but when Gaga has been a role model for me since 2008, it kind of makes one angry when they hear a rumor that she supports something you are totally 100% against.

And about the cursing..I will say whatever I want as long as my freedom of speech hasn't been taken away. Although I do apologize for swearing in anger when it wasn't even true.

So DaVinciAnnaMay, I'm sorry for my original comment.

No harm, no foul. Apology is accepted. Swearing only has power if you give it. Your anger was understandable. I was quite angry myself when I heard about this.

While we cannot fully speak for Gaga, I highly doubt this is something she supports. Actions speak louder than words and so far, her actions have been positive. I read Anonymous' press release and to me it seemed like they were just arbitrarily choosing celebrities to make a point.

Trust me, I agree that people need to stop bagging her out coz I think shes amazing too, and I look up to her because she's my hero, but when I read she was supporting SOPA, it didn't make sense to me.
